On Monday (31), OpenAI announced a historic $40 billion funding round, raising the company’s valuation to $300 billion.

The funding comes in partnership with Japanese investment giant SoftBank Group, allowing the company to “further push the boundaries of AI research,” said the San Francisco-based firm in a blog post.

“Their support will help us continue building AI systems that drive scientific discovery, enable personalized education, enhance human creativity, and pave the way toward AGI (artificial general intelligence) that benefits all of humanity.”

In a statement, SoftBank said it is on a mission to realize artificial superintelligence (ASI) — AI that surpasses human intelligence — and that OpenAI is its closest partner in reaching that goal.

“The advancement of OpenAI’s AI models is essential for achieving AGI and ASI, and massive computing power is critical,” said SoftBank, which plans to inject $10 billion initially, followed by another $30 billion by the end of the year, depending on certain conditions.
